What effect to stimulants have on the brain?
They speed it up.
What happens when a person stops taking drugs after a long time?
They could suffer from withdrawals.
What is the difference between the different classes of drugs?
They carry different penalties for possession and supply
A - Highest penalty
C - Lowest Penalty
How do depressants affect your synapses?
They bind with the receptor molecules at the synapse and block the transmission of the molecule.
What do cigarettes contain and what do the ingredients do?
1) Carbon Monoxide - binds to haemoglobin so oxygen cannot be carried
2) Nicotine - addictive
3) Tar - carcinogenic
4) Particulates - Gather in lungs and block them
What are the short term effects of alcohol?
1) Blurred vision
2) Low inhibitions
3) Vasodilation
4) Poor coordination
How are the cilia affected by tobacco smoke?
They become paralysed and can no longer clean the lungs.
How does alcohol affect the liver?
The liver breaks down the alcohol and the toxic chemicals damage the liver cells causing cirrhosis in the liver.
Suggest why the number of smokers in the UK has decreased?
People are more aware of the dangers.
