HONG KONG WEATHER Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the typical wether patterns in South Asia during summer?

A

ITCZ crosses over mid India and Myanmar and then sharply up into China. The Tibetan low and the ITCZ low will draw air from the Indian Ocean over the Asian land mass. The Tibetan low is caused by heating
Air that crosses the equator turns to the right and forms the SW monsoon.
The SW monsoon warms from below on it’s way to the ITCZ and picks up moisture from the Indian Ocean and becomes very unstable with very convective WX with Heavy rain fall that can persist for months
Indian Ocenan warms significantly which can cause te formation of Typhoons

Q

Describe the typical weather patterns in South Asia during winter

A

ITCZ starts from Joburg and goes over Madagscar and cruves slowly over Northern Australia, well South of the Equator
Cool dry air from the Siberian HIgh moves to the Low at the ITCZ.
As air moves South it gets deflected to the right, causing the NE monsoon. It gives Little weather. As it moves over the sea it collects moisture.
As it crosses the Equator it turns to the left and becomes the NW monsoon which gives a lot of convective activity

Q

Describe the monsoons affecting Hong Kong?

A

Winter Monsoon :
Sep to March, is cool and dry, formed over the Siberia and the Tibetan Plateau as it cools down in winter and cools the air with it forming a high pressure which flows down to the South eastern shores. Wind direction then comes from the North East.

Summer Monsoon :
April to August, is created by the land heating and forming a low pressure bringing in the warm moist air off the Indian Ocean, therefore wind direction during the summer monsoon is from the Southwest.
