Module 6 Flashcards
What is a site where two or more bones meet or link?
Articulation
also known as a joint
What are the main functions of joints?
Give skeleton mobility
Hold skeleton together
Which functional classification of joints is immovable?
Synarthroses
Which functional classification of joints is slightly moveable?
Amphiarthroses
Which functional classification of joints is freely moveable?
Diarthroses
What are the three structural classifications of joints?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
This structural classification of joints are defined by bones being joined by dense fibrous tissue and they have no joint cavity and most are immoveable
Fibrous joints
This is a fibrous joint that are rigid interlocking joints that allow for growth as a youth but soon grow together
Sutures
This is a fibrous joint where bones are connected to ligaments they can be immoveable to sight moveable
Syndesmoses
These fibrous joints are peg-in-socket that make of the teeth in socket, the fibrous connection is periodontal ligament
Gomphoses
This structural classification of joints are bones untied by cartilage, there are two types.
Cartilaginous joints
This type of cartilagenous joint is a bar or plate of hyaline cartilage that unites the bones and all are synarthotic
Synchondroses
This is a type of cartilgenous joint that has hyaline cartilage that covers articulating surfaces, they are strong and flexible and amphiarthroses
Symphyses
This structural classification of joints are all freely moveable, includes all limb joints and the majority of the joints in the body.
Synovial Joints
These joints have articular cartilage, synovial joint cavities, and also have joint capsules
