Mitigating Effects Of Climate Change Flashcards

1
Q

How does carbon capture storage work?

A

CCS uses technology to capture CO2 emissions from coal-fire powered stations and industry.
Once captured, the carbon gas is compressed and transported by pipeline to injection well.
It’s then injected as liquid into reservoirs then it is injected in liquid form into suitable geographical reservoirs to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.

Q

CCS in Canada?

A

In 2014, Boundary Dam in Canada’s Saskatchewan Province became the first commercial, carbon capture power plant.

It aims to cut CO2 emissions by 90%

Q

How did Sri Lanka modify photosynthesis?

A

In the 1900s, Sri Lanka lost 76% of its mangrove forests, so the government aimed to protect 21,000 acres of this forest die to its ability to absorb more CO2 than other forests.

Q

What is recognised as a method of reducing CO2 emissions by the IPCC?

A

Plantation forests (which comprise 7% of global forest area) are hugely effective carbon sinks, in comparison to ordinary forests. These plantations forests remove more CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and then store it in their biomas.

Q

What was included in the 2015 Paris agreement and how many countries were involved?

A

195 countries involved.

  • aim to limit the average global temperature to 1.5*C above pre-industrial levels
  • provide adaptation support for developing countries
  • strengthen the ability to adapt to and be resilient in dealing with the impacts of climate change
  • meet every five years to set more ambitious targets

Q

How are customers encouraged to modify deforestation?

A

They’re encouraged o lay to buy wood certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (timber products grown sustainably).

Q

How do Brazil modify their deforestation?

A

In 2005, landowners were required to preserve 80% of forests. Infringements are punished by fines / prisons. So far Brazil has reduced deforestation to 70% and has reduced carbon emissions by more than any other country.

Q

What are the Boundary Dam’s aims and expectations?

A

It aims to cut carbon emissions by 90% by trapping CO2 underground before it can reach the atmosphere.

Saskatchewan state-owned electricity provider expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 1 million tonnes a year (the equivalent to 250,000 cars).

Q

In 2015, what did Sri Lanka do?

A

They became the first nation to protect all of its mangrove forests.

This is because mangroves absorb more carbon than other forests and fix CO2 into the soil where it is stored for 100s of years. They also don’t burn due to the swampy environment and lack of fuel.

Q

Define carbon farming.

A

It is where one type of crop is replaced by another that has greater productivity and can absorb more carbon from the atmosphere.

16
Q

What are the 3 ways of aiming to reduce deforestation?

A
  • consumers are encouraged to only buy wood certified by the FSC - which include timber products that have been grown sustainably.
  • countries, organisations and individuals to make carbon offset payments to offset their carbon emissions. This may involve paying for existing forests to be protected, developing renewable energy alternatives or planting trees.
  • in Malaysia, the Selective Management System is a sustainable approach to logging by felling selected trees and planting replacements.
17
Q

Government policies regarding deforestation in Brazil?

A

In 2005, the government of Brazil decided to slash deforestation rates by 80%.

  • landowners required to preserve 80% of virgin forest. Infringements as punishments are given.
18
Q

Define geo-sequestration.

A

When CO2 is stored in deep geological formations
