Atropine is een inhibitor van de neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Atropine verhindert de werking van acetylcholine door te binden aan de acetylcholinereceptor, die zich bevindt op neuroeffector knooppunten op glad spierweefsel, de hartspier, kliercellen, perifere ganglia en in het centraal zenuwstelsel. Door de binding van atropine aan deze muscarine-receptoren wordt de signaaloverdracht in deze neuroeffector knooppunten verhinderd.

Scopolamine, ook bekend als hyoscine, is een mAChR antagonist.

Het werkingsmechanisme van scopolamine lijkt op dat van atropine, met als grootste verschil dat scopolamine een remmend effect op het centrale zenuwstelsel heeft en vermoeidheid, slaap en geheugenverlies veroorzaakt. Atropine heeft een stimulerend effect op het centraal zenuwstelsel.

Scopolamine wordt als geneesmiddel gebruikt om misselijkheid en braken bij reisziekte te verminderen
