Cardiovascular Flashcards

1
Q

cardiac dz associated w vit E & Se deficiencies

A
  • deficiency causes oxidative injury → myocardial necrosis & mineralization (“white m. dz”) / myocardial failure
  • C/S = hydrothorax, hydropericardium, ascites, pulmonary edema
  • pigs: will also have subepicardial hemorrhages d/t vascular failure (mulberry heart dz)

Q

endocardiosis: age, lesions, path, CS, 2°

A
  • older dogs
  • degen of valves (usually mitral) → thick, shrunken & nodular
  • myxomatous degen & fibrosis
  • path: valvular insufficiency
  • C/S: pulmonary venous congestion, sudden death
  • 2°: left HF, jet lesions

Q

endocarditis: lesions, path, 2°

A
  • proliferative, usually valvular
  • bacteria cause endothelial damage (vegetative)
  • 2° dysfxn of valves → CHF, bacterial embolization → infarcts

Q

pathophys of atherosclerosis vs. artiosclerosis

A
  • atherosclerosis: inflam! ex: dogs w hypothyroidism & DM, rabbits, chickens, pigs & primates
  • artiosclerosis: no inflam! endothelial damage (ex: systemic or pulmonary hypertension) → hardening/thickening of arteries

histo lesions of of atherosclerosis vs. artiosclerosis

A
  • atherosclerosis: macrophages, lipid vacuoles & cholesterol clefts
  • artiosclerosis: thickening of wall (proliferation of smooth m. in tunica media) & hyaline degen of smooth m. cells
