Endocrine System Flashcards
What is a hormone?
Chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates activity of certain cells
Two hormones responsible for maintenance of glucose level and where are they produced
Glucagon and insulin
Secreted from the pancreas
What hormones are secreted by the adrenal medulla and their functions
Adrenaline - ‘fight or flight’
Noradrenaline - maintenance of blood pressure by causing vasoconstriction
Hormone is released in response to cope with stress
What hormones are secreted by the adrenal cortex and their functions
Aldosterone - maintains the electrolyte balance in body
Cortisol- secretion is stimulated by ACTH and stress
Androgens - sex hormones
What is secreted by the thyroid gland and what is the function
- secretes the thyroxin (iodine required for production)
- function to stimulate the metabolism rate
- promote growth and development
Difference between pituitary gland and hypothalamus
Hypothalamus sends message to the pituitary gland to release the hormone.
The hypothalamus detects the change
Chemical messenger definition
Chemical hormones secreted by the endocrine glands which are transported in the blood
What is the function of the thyroid gland
To stimulate the rate of metabolism and promote growth and development
Hormones affects many aspects of the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism
