What causes pharyngitis?
A
Usually Viral:
Adenovirus - EBV - Enterovirus - Rhinovirus - Influenza - Parainfluenza
Sometimes Bacteria:
Strep Pyogenes - Staph Aureus - Strep Pneumoniae

What are the symptoms of tonsilitis?
A
In kids < 3yrs:
Problems feeding
Fever
Older:
Dysphagia
Sore Throat
Coughing

What are the signs of tonsilitis?
A
Inflammed & pussy tonsils (more likely bacterial)
Cervical Lymph Node Enlargement

How is tonsilitis investigated?
A
Throat & nasal swab - Culture
Bloods - Lymphocytosis. Also if atypical lymphocytes could be a part of infectious mononucleosis instead

How to treat pharyngitis?
A
Viral - Rest
Bacterial - Rest and maybe penicillin
NO amoxicillin, ampicillin, co-amoxiclav etc. Reacts with EBV to cause horrible rashes
