What causes sinusitis?

A

Usually a viral infection from another URTI.

Occasionally can be bacterial, fungal or infected tooth.

What causes sinusitis to become chronic?

A

Allergy e.g. hayfever or asthma
Smoking
Weakend Immune System
Nasal Polyps

How does sinusitis present?

A
  • Dull face ache
  • Headache
  • Congestion
  • Thick Nasal Dischage
    Worse when changing Orientation

What investigations are there for sinusitis?

A

None acutely.
If it persists can do:
CT - XR - Nasal Endoscopy - MRI

How do we treat sinusitis?

A

Normally self-limiting
If persistant:
Nasal Irrigation - Amoxicillin/Co-Amoxiclav - Surgical Intervention
