A

What impact did the Second World War have on women?

A

Women were once again urged to join war work even if they were married. The total number pf women in the workforce went up by 27% between 1933 and 1939 and just 2% between 1939 and 1944. In Britain, the increase was 50% over the war years.

How did education change under the Nazis?

A

The Nazis saw children as a valuable resource to be educated to become good Nazis, so they changed what was taught and who taught it. The state school structure stayed in place but private primary school education was abolished.

What were the changes made to the curriculum?

A

The Nazis had set up a National Socialist Teachers League (NSLB) in April 1929. In 1933 it just had 6000 members. ‘Undesirable’ teachers were purged. The most important role of schools, for the Nazis, was to teach loyalty to Hitler and Germany, physical fitness and racial purity.

A

A

The policy of co-ordination involved making sure that every aspect of life was controlled to meet the aims of Nazi policy.

How did the Nazis censor unacceptable culture?

A

On 10 May 1933, the Nazis organised the mass burning of about 25000 books that were ‘unsound’. Towns also held book burnings on various dates throughout 1933. Art, music and theatre were also censored.

What was the Reichskulturkammer (RKK)?

A

All artists and those who dealt with art had to be registered with the Reich Chamber of Culture, which had separate departments for music, literature, motion pictures and broadcasting. The chamber could refuse to register ‘degenerate’ art.

How did the Nazis attempt to involve everyone in culture?

A

There were ‘Strength Through Joy’ trips to the theatre, opera and art galleries and museums. Sport was encouraged, for everyone, to produce a healthy nation. Artists, particularly sculptors were encouraged to produce art that showed strong, healthy, physically perfect Aryans.
