Social-Cognitive Learning
Proposes that learning takes place in a social setting, and also involves cognitive processes
Social Setting-
individual sees another person’s actions and the consequences of those actions
Cognitive-
individual chooses to reproduce the behaviour
Observational Learning
occurs when someone uses observations of another person’s actions and the resulting consequences to guide their future actions
The Process Of Observational Learning
Attention, Retention, Reproduction, Motivation And Reinforcement
Attention
The learner must ACTIVELY WATCH the model’s behaviour and their consequences
Retention
The learner must retain a MENTAL REPRESENTATION of the model’s behaviour for future use
Reproduction
The learner must have the PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CAPABILITIES to reproduce the behaviour
Motivation
The learner must have the DESIRE to perform the behaviour
(After stage four is when the learner performs the behaviour)
Reinforcement
The consequence of the behaviour INFLUENCES the learner’s LIKELIHOOD OF REPRODUCING the behaviour in the future
(This stage occurs after the learner has performed the behaviour)
Attention - Models
Factors That Influence Whether The Learner Pays Attention To The Model-
Liked, credible, attractive, of high status, similar, familiar, visible and stands out from others, behaving in a way that the learner believes can be imitated
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Desires
Intrinsic-
occur from within the learner, such as the desire to perform well on an exam
Extrinsic-
occur from factors that are external to the learner, such as the desire to receive praise from your teacher for doing well on the exam
Types Of Reinforcement
Self-Reinforcement-
the behaviour is reinforced through factors internal to the individual, such as feeling proud
External Reinforcement-
the behaviour is reinforced by factors external to the learner, such as receiving an award
Vicarious Reinforcement-
the behaviour is reinforced by observing the reinforcement of another person performing the same behaviour
