What were the causes of Wyatt’s rebellion?

A

Some were motivated by religion and feared England becoming re-catholicised
Xenophobia against Philip of Spain
Decline of the local cloth trade prompted some poorer rebels to express their economic grievances.
Resentment of proposed royal marriage was the main grievance.

What were the key events of Wyatt’s rebellion?

A

1st Feb- Mary rallies support with a speech against the rebels in London.
3rd Feb- Rebels are prevented from entering London due to the Queen’s forces holding London Bridge.
7th Feb- Rebels stop at Ludgate on the edge of London and surrender.

What was the outcome of the rebellion?

A

Elizabeth was arrested and locked in the Tower.
She is not executed as Mary is unsure of her involvement.
Mary’s brave and resolute actions once again crushed the threat to her throne.
480 were convicted and 90 were executed after trial, 600 were pardoned.
