Travel has become cheaper.
Internet means cheaper deals can be found and deals searched for.
Why are some areas becoming more popular than they used to be?
Improvements to transport. People can get to more places.
Unusual tourist destinations can market themselves and be more known.
Better infrastructure to invest in eg hotels.
Why are cities popular?
Culture eg museums etc. Entertainment eg bars. Shopping. London Paris etc.
Why are mountain areas popular?
Beautiful scenery
Activities like walking, skiing climbing etc. Eg the Alps.
Why are coastal areas popular?
Beaches, swimming, fishing. Spain etc.
Why is tourism important?
Creates income. Kenya relies on tourism for 80% GDP.
Create locals jobs.
Why is the uk popular for tourists?
Countryside, historic landmarks, eg stone henge
Churches and cathedrals
Castles and palaces
Half of all visitors to London. Shopping museums etc.
What factors effect the number of tourists visiting the U.K.?
Bad weather discouraged tourists.
World economy decline means less tourists visit.
Value of pound, if low it is cheaper to come. So more visitors come.
Terrorism discourages tourists.
Major events ie the royal wedding
What contributed to the rise of Blackpool?
Fabulous beaches
Huge train station linked to major cities ie Manchester.
“Hollywood of the North” theatres and casinos.
High class early Butlins.
What contributed to the decline of Blackpool?
Manchester airport opened in 1975, abroad holidays were more appealing
Hot climates were more appealing
Richer tourists stopped going so casinos and theatres closed
Stag and hen nights dissuaded tourists.
Butlins closed down many hotels in the 1970s. Ruined economy.
How has Blackpool been improved?
£10million upgrading illuminations Pleasure beach theme park £50million promenade with benches, seating, cycle lanes, grasses areas Sandcastle water park (all year round) Blue flag award for beach cleanliness.
What is mass tourism?
A large number of tourists within a smaller area.
What are some positive effects of mass tourism?
Economic social and environmental
Economic - brings money for locals
Provides jobs
Social - jobs means young people stay in area
Improved infrastructure- roads etc
Tourist income can be reinvested into local area.
Environmental - money can be used to run national parks
What are some disadvantages of mass tourism?
Economic social and environmental
Economic - Lot of profits kept by travel companies instead of locals
Social - badly paid jobs and seasonal
Traffic congestion causes pollution and inconvenience
Behaviour can offend locals
Environmental -greenhouse gases cause global warming
Increased litter and sewage can cause pollution
Destruction of natural habitats
What are some ways to reduce the negative effects of tourism?
Improve transport links - reduces pollution and congestion
Limiting tourist numbers - sensitive areas preserved
Lots of bins to reduce little. Cleaning staff.
