Q

How did the Apaches adapt to the changing culture of the West in the late 1700s and early 1800s?

A

Comanches and Lakotas forced Apahes out of the Great Plains into New Mexico, where they raided Spanish and Pueblo settlements. Apaches moved into the canyons of northwest New Mexico, where they settled and became known as Navajos. Other Apaches continued raiding Spanish settlements

Q

Why did the Spanish have difficulty attracting settlers to California and Texas?

A

Both regions acted as buffer zones to project Mexico, but California was too distant from settlements in Mexico to profit from agricultural trade, and Texas was considered too poor and dangerous because of frequent American Indian raids.
