Matter has mass and takes up space.

Why does pollen grains move randomly in water?
A
Water is made up of very small water particles, way smaller than pollen grains and they are moving in different directions. They hit the pollen grains in different directions, therefore the pollen grains are moving randomly in zigzag paths.

Why can you smell the perfume contained in a balloon?
A
There are empty spaces between particles, therefore the perfume particles pass through the spaces and go outside.
