6.2 particle model for the 3 states of matter Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, and gas.
Do solids, liquids, and gases have a fixed shape?
Solids have a fixed shape, but liquids and gases don’t have a fixed shape.
Do solids, liquids, and gases have a fixed volume?
Solids and liquids have a fixed volume, but gases don’t have a fixed volume.
Can solids, liquids, and gases be compressed?
Solids and liquids cannot be compressed, but gases can be compressed.
What describes the arrangements and movements of the particles in solids, liquids, and gases?
Particle model.
How are the particles in solids arranged? Can they move freely?
They are close together and arranged regularly. They cannot move from one position to another but can vibrate about fixed positions.
How are the particles in liquids arranged? Can they move freely?
They are close together but arranged irregularly. They can move around each other.
How are the particles in gases arranged? Can they move freely?
They are far apart. They can move freely in all directions.
