Immune System Meds Flashcards
cyclosporine (Sandimmune)
Specific immunosuppression drug for organ transplants by inhibiting lymphocytes
Side effects, Malignant HTN, Renal Disease, UV exposure
azathioprine (Imuran)
Immunosuppressant - inhibits purine synthesis in cells. Less specific than cyclosporine. Used for transplants
Side effects: D&V, hepatotoxicity, severe leukopenia, bone marrow suppression
mycophenolate (Cellcept, Myofortic)
Inhibits inflammatory response mediated by immune system. Prophylaxis for organ rejection. DO NOT USE WITH azathioprine
Side effects: HTN, chest pain, D&V, UTIs & rash
prednisone
Corticosteroid - Decreases inflammation. Used for immunosuppression.
Side effects - Cushingoid symptoms, embolism, depression, flushing, sweating
basiliximab (Simulect)
Monoclonal Antibody (interleukin-2 antagonist) Blocks interleukin 2 receptor on selective activated T-Lymphocytes. (These are antibodies made in an animal)
