What is an indicator?

It is a relatively simple measurement that is intended to represent complex aspects of something else, such as environmental quality or ecological integrity. Birds are an indicator species because the presence/absence of certain birds offers insight into the quality and health of an ecosystem.

Why are birds an important indicator species?

Answer 2

Many families and bird species are sensitive to changes in enviro quality (stressors) of their habitat. When the quality of a habitat becomes degraded (usually due to anthropogenic influences) the diversity and abundance of birds are quickly influenced, which provides a rapid indication of change in ecosystem health.

Question 3

What physical characteristics are used to ID birds?

Answer 3

1. size and shape - body size, beak size/shape, etc. (ability to survive is reflected in morphology)
2. colour - bars, chest, head, tail, etc.
3. habitat - open park, forest, wetland, etc.
4. behaviour - hopping, climbing, foraging, digging for worms, etc.
5. sound - many birds have characteristic sound (ex. chickadee)
