Lab 6 - Conservation Ecology Flashcards

1
Q

What is an exotic species?

A

It is a species not native to an ecosystem, often established purposely or inadvertently by human activity. They are aka alien species and may be invasive or become a pest species

Q

What is a riparian zone?

A

It is a zone of transition from an aquatic to terrestrial system. It is generally thought of as adjacent to permanent rivers/streams, but can be located next to a lake, estuary, pothole, bog, meadow, etc.

Q

What is runoff?

A

It is the amount of precipitation not absorbed into the ground that flows into surface water bodies or into storm sewer systems - it can cause fluctuations in water levels

Q

What is a watershed?

A

It is all the land and tributaries draining to a single body of water and is often used as regions for water quality management

Q

What is constraint planning?

A

A landscape has historical/cultural features and (a)biotic features, which provide both constraints and opportunities for development. Long term monitoring and carrying capacity are often ignored

Q

What is a stormwater management (SWM) pond?

A

It provides storm water flow control, recharges ground water, and improves water quality by enhancing the removal of pollutants. They maintain a permanent pool of water in addition to temporarily detaining storm water
