Cranial Nerves 2 Flashcards
What modalities does CN V carry?
Special visceral efferent –> muscles of mastication
General somatic afferent –> sensation in face
What does the mesencephalic nucleus of CN V receive?
Proprioception
What does the chief sensory nucleus of CN V receive?
Discriminative touch
What does the spinal nucleus of CN V receive?
Pain and temperature
Conscious sensation from viscera supplied by CN IX & X
Which division of the trigeminal carried the motor root?
Mandibular (CN V3)
Where do the 3 divisions of the trigeminal exit the skull via to supply the face?
CN V1 - supraorbital notch/ foramen
CN V2 - infraorbital notch/ foramen
CN V3 - mental foramen
Where is the trigeminal ganglion found?
Meckel’s cave (dura mater) on the apex of the petrous temporal bone
If all three divisions of the trigeminal are affected, where must the lesion be?
Pons or cranial base
Which branches of the trigeminal pass through the cavernous sinus?
CN V1 & V2
Which opening in the skull does CN V1 pass through?
Superior orbital fissure
Which opening in the skull does CN V2 pass through?
Foramen rotundum
Which opening in the skull does CN V3 pass through?
Foramen ovale
What are the main branches of CNV1?
Frontal nerve
Lacrimal nerve
Nasociliary nerve
What does the frontal nerve divide into?
Supraorbital
Supratrochlear
What does the lacrimal nerve supply?
Lacrimal gland (sensation and PNS secretomotor) Skin of lateral and upper eyelid
What does the nasociliary nerve divide into?
Long ciliary
Anterior and posterior ethmoidal nerves
What does the nasociliary nerve continue as?
Infratrochlear nerve
Which nerve is the external nasal nerve a branch of?
Anterior ethmoidal
Why would you be worried if you saw a patient with shingles on the tip of their nose?
Supplied by external nasal branch of the anterior ethmoidal branch of the nasociliary branch of CNV1
The nasociliary nerve also supplies sensation to the cornea of the eye, therefore Shingles at the tip of the nose is a warning that the disease will also develop on the cornea
