Obesity And Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards

Q

How to measure obesity? Is there an alternative way?

A

You use the BMI, body mass index. This is when you died weight by height squared. A healthy range is 18.5-24.9. If you are over 30 it means you are obese. Also a waist-to-hip ratio can be used. This is when you divide your waist circumference by your hip circumference. If you are over 0.85 for women or 1.0 for men they have abdominal obesity.

Q

How does it affect your body?

A

It affects your body as the too much cholesterol creates fatty deposits which build up in the arteries and restrict blood flow. This triggers blood clots to form which block blood flow completely, meaning it is deprived of oxygen. If this leads to the heart it can cause an heart attack and if it leads to the brain it can cause a stroke.

Q

What are the two types of diabetes?

A

Type 1 is caused by the lack of insulin–> when the pancreas produces little to no insulin as a result the glucose can rise to a level which can kill them.
Type 2 is when a person is resistant to insulin–> this is when the pancreas can’t produce enough insulin resulting in glucose levels increasing.
