Farnese Gallery Ceiling

  • Commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese
  • It took him 227 days to complete it
  • Below the ceiling are the antique sculptures owned by the Farnese family
  • Caracci used the technique, quadroriportato, by painting realistic frames around each scene on the ceiling
  • The theme of the central painting on the ceiling, The Triumph of Baachus and Ariadne, is the love between ancient gods and goddesses
