- One of the several works by Strozzi that represent the Catholic Church’s acts of mercy as in giving to those who are thirsty and sick
- The presence of tenebrism shows Caravaggio’s impact on Genoese artists

- The painting is considered the culmination of Roman vault painting towards the end of the 17th century
- Made for the Church of St. Ignazio
- Celebrates the principal founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola
- Pozzo incorporated the illusionistic technique, quadratura, in which architecture and fancy are intermixed
- Commissioned by Padre Oliva, the 11th superior general of the Jesuits
