Lecture 8-9 Flashcards
what is the basis of Lafollette’s criteria
Consistency
The use of the correct principle
The correct application of the principle
what is Rachel’s deontological argument from killing Argument
killing ‘some’ animals is wrong bc they have a right to life
How do we know if someone has a right to life
Rachel’s argument is that if you have a life then you have a right to life
is there a distinction isbetween ‘having’ a life and ‘being’ a life
yes
Rachel’s argument is having a life is what
biographical notion
Rachel’s argument of being a life is what
a biological notion
Rachel argues that what has a life
humans, monkeys, and mammals (pigs, cows) have a life
rachel argues that what does not have a life
Whereas bugs, shrimp don’t have a life
what is rachels Critical analysis
P1: if you have something then you have right to it
• P2: you have a life (e.g. car, computer)
▪ Hence: you have a right to life. (e.g. you have a right to ride you car, use your computer)
what is The argument from pain and suffering (rachels)
Eating meat is wrong bc it causes pain and suffering to animals, bc animals in the farm industry have to endure pain and suffering in order to produce meat for human beings
what is Frey’s criticism
Producing meat is wrong vs eating meat
Frey is asking can you transfer the wrongness from eating meat to producing meat
give an example of fey’s criticism
E.g. your neighbor is killing a turkey and throws it away in the garbage, you eat the turkey. Is your action wrong or is his action wrong? You are merely benefitting from a practice that happens to be wrong, you are not preforming the practice yourself. Hence eating meat and producing meat are two different things.
Is it wrong to benefit from practices that entail the suffering/killing of animals
not necessarily because you are not participating in the killing of the animals. E.g. your parents are murdered and you are inheriting their money. You did not kill them but you’re still benefitting from their murder
Is it wrong to support the practice/is it wrong to eat meat because it indirectly causes the suffering of animals:
vegetarianism indirectly diminishes the suffering of animals–> Boycotting meat lowers demand and lowers prices thus lowers profit therefore lowering production of meat=lower suffrage of animals
what is the Problem with vegetarianism
one individual action has no impact, but as a social movement can have an impact
