structure of a drama

A
  • script: written form of the drama
  • cast of characters: list of those in the drama. often this list includes a one-line tidbit of information about the character that is important to understanding the play
  • acts: scripts are divided into acts similar to chapters in a book. often reflect the stages in progression of the plot. most plays contain between 1 and 5 acts
  • scenes: acts are divided into scenes. a new scene usually indicates a change in location or in time
  • lines: dialogue spoken by the character. in the script, character is usually listed on the left, with the lines to be spoken on the right
  • stage directions: these include information on the setting of the play or the act or scene and also instructions to the characters on movement and tone. give in parentheses and often italicized so characters will not confuse them with their lines
