  • first playhouse built by actor James Burbage in 1576, which later burned
  • Shakespeare and his company, the Lord Chamberlain’s men, built a theater, the Globe, using some of the timber for Burbage’s original theatre
  • Globe had galleries for seating, places around the stage where peasants stood to view performances, stage o different levels for acting
  • owned by the players themselves
  • plays were announced by flying flagss on the theater. black flag meant tragedy, whit flag meant comedy, red flag meant history
  • burned in 1613, was rebuilt in 1614 and used until it was banned by the Puritans
  • first permanent playhouse, the “Theater” was built in 1576
