why are immunisations important in children. Who, What, When
effective public health measure, eradication of disease
all children and additional ones if at high risk, dont give live vaccines in immunocompromised except in HIV, postpone if unwell. give in relation to chronolgical age - dont correct for preterm - no link with autism
how do we monitor growth ?
3 key measurements:
weight - kgs
height or length - cm head circumference
what is FTT or weight faltering?
child growing too slowly in form and usually in function for the expected rate at his or her age, significantly low rate of weight gain
causes of FTT?
maternal -( poor milk production, poorly prepared feeds, inadequate care)
infant - (prematurity, small for dates, oropalatal abnormalities - cleft palate, neuromuscualar disease - cerebral palsy, genetic disorders)
increased metabolic demands ( thyroid disease, malignancy, renal disease, heart disease, anemia, infection, crohns/IBD)
excessive nutrient loss ( malabsorption, short bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, pancreatic insufficiency, persistent diarrhoea, food allergy)
non-organic cause ( poverty, child neglect, feeding disorders)
