    troops which the KKK couldn’t stop
  • 1963 only 9% of schools in the old south were desegregated due to local white opposition as education comes under state and not federal government

A

MLK was shown to be the voice of the civil rights movement
non violent demonstation

2,500 arrest

MLK arrested and only released on bail because JFK and RFK interfered
this caused him to make national news

violence of police shown on TV they used water canons dogs and clubs
this horrified Americans

led to JFK introducing the civil rights legislation which was passed by LBJ

A

1955 murder of Emmett Till killed for talking to a white teenager in money Mississippi murderers were not punished

1961 they fire-bombed buses with freedom riders on them

12th June 1963 Medgar Evers secretary for the NAACP was assassinated by a member off the KKK who was never Brough to trial

the MIA faced death threats during the boycott

what were the SNCC?

A

student nonviolent coordinating committee

feb 1960 group of students campaign about segregated lunch counters in Woolworths

led to the set up of the SNCC in April

actions forced stores in the old south to end racial discrimination

A

The Congress of Racial Equality

1961 black and white students participated in freedom rides
this meant the sat in seat that were white only and avoided waiting areas

they were attacked by mobs in Alabama which allowed them to gain national publicity

also forced the federal government to protect them

rosa parks refused to give up her seat on a bus
led to her arrested

from 1955 to 1956 black people refused public transport

december 1956 us Supreme Court declared segregation on public transport as unconstitutional

A

segregation carried on in schools and benches etc

discrimination in housing and jobs

American dream was that hard work brings prosperity but this wasn’t possible for blacks

suburbia mainly for white people
black people lived in crowded cities and had poor accommodation
