Q

What is the preferred initial pharmacological agent for the treatment of T2DM

A

Metformin

If non-insulin monotherapy at maximum tolerated doses not work after 3 months, add a second oral agent, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, or basal insulin.

In patients with long-standing suboptimally controlled T2DM and established CVD, empagliflozin or liraglutide should be considered
