Nervous system Part two Flashcards
What are the four regions of the brain?
- Cerebral Hemisphere
- Diencephalon
- Brain stem
- Cerebellum
What are Gyri?
elevated ridges of the brain
What are Sulci?
grooves between Gyri
What are fissures?
deeper grooves than Sulci, separate larger regions of the brain
What is Grey matter?
cortex; comprised of cell bodies, dendrites, unmyelinated axons
what is whit matter?
deep to the cortex; comprised of myelinated axons
What does the Cerebellum control?
motor co-ordination and timing
what does the hypothalamus control?
autonomic nervous system, body temp, hunger thirst, endocrine system, feelings of pleasure, rage and fear.
what does the cerebral hemisphere control?
controls muscle functions, speech, thought, emotions, reading, writing and learning
the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body
what is the thalamus?
gateway for sensory information
what is the general function for the Diencephalon?
relays sensory information between the brain regions and controls many autonomic functions of the peripheral nervous system
what does the brain stem control?
the flow of messages between the brain and the rest of the body and also controls basic body functions such as breathing, swallowing and heart rate
what are sensory fibres?
afferent neurons that enter via the posterior dorsal nerve root
what are motor fibres?
efferent neurons that leave via the anterior or ventral root
what is the reflex arc?
the circuit travelled by impulses producing a reflex action; receptor organ, afferent nerve, interneuron, efferent nerve, effector organ (muscle)
