Why is it necessary to test materials?
The designer must know that a material is suitable for its intended purpose.
What are three basic industrial tests for hardness?
Brinell test, Vickers test, Rockwell test
What happens in a hardness test?
All tests produce an indentation or the material or product that can be measured with the aid of a microscope.
What is tensile testing?
This involves putting material under tension by stretching to provide information regarding tensile strength, elasticity and plastic properties such as ductility and malleability.
Can you name the three main methods of impact testing?
The Izod test, the Charpy test, the Houndsfield test
What is being measured in an impact test?
Impact tests indicate the toughness of a material, in particular, its resistance to mechanical shock.
Can you name two destructive tests for materials?
Wear resistance and fatigue testing
What is a non-destructive test?
A method of testing that does not damage or destroy the material or product. E.g surface crack detection, internal defect detection and magnetic testing.
How could a chair be tested for fatigue?
By a force being repeatedly applied to the seating area that is representative of a person sitting down.
