A

. Was essentially the occupation of Alcatraz island in support of the the Native Americans attempts to regain tribal land.

. Ultimately however the occupation was unsuccessful and all the occupiers were eventually forced off the island.

What were the positive outcomes of the siege of Alcatraz?

A

. The event gained worldwide media coverage and as a result it made many aware of the conditions of Native Americans. This increased pressure from the public may have forced to government to reconsider its policies.

. The event undoubtedly bough more Natives together, with over 10,000 visiting the island throughout the siege and encouraging other occupations across America. The event therefore helped to better unify Native Americans.

. The siege encouraged more militant and sometimes violent action and as a result of this the AIM gained national attention and publicity, which they couldn’t have achieved via the ballot box.

What were the negative outcome of the Siege of Alcatraz?

A

. The militancy and violence that followed the siege was seen by some as Counter productive as it went against Native beliefs and presented Natives in a bad picture in certain areas of the US.

. The violence also had the impact of splitting the movement therefore further limiting the activities of Natives.
