Q

Explain Disrupting nature

A

New factories often need to be built to manufacture new and existing technologies.

the land being cleared to make space for these factories was a natural area where animals were living.

This destroys the habitat of various living creatures, which can heavily affect the cycle of nature.

It also destroys wildflowers that are important for pollinating insects
eg:-bees

We need bees for so many of our daily food products and if they were to disappear this
would have a huge negative impact on our food system.

Q

Explain Consuming resources

A

Technologies such as computers, smartphones and tablets contain precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper.

These resources are limited, and they can also leak into water supplies and soil during manufacture and disposal

which causes serious health issues for people and ecosystems living near factories.

Q

Explain Pollution

A

The manufacturing process for technologies produces air, water and noise pollution.

Carbon emissions are released into the
air during manufacturing. (greenhouse gases that contribute towards global warming.)

The gases get released from
fossil fuels, such as coal or oil, that are burnt to provide energy in the manufacturing process.

You’ve already learnt how precious
metals can leak into water supplies during the manufacturing
process.

Factories are also often very noisy, (serious stress and disruption for the people and animals nearby.)

Q

Explain Waste

A

for example plastic waste from cutting out the plastic cases that are often used for devices.

Sometimes waste sent to landfill where it will take years to be completely broken down.

It can also leak toxic chemicals into
the ground.

Q

Positive effects on the environment of using technology

A
  1. used to monitor dangerous and hazardous environments in a factory or ( important in unsafe places like a nuclear reactor or an active volcano.)
  2. to create smart homes.
help to reduce the waste of precious resources that are used to generate electricity. by to monitoring
and control our use of resources in our houses.
  3. to create smart cities.
    reduce carbon emissions,
  4. can be used to create renewable energies such as solar, wind and hydro.
  5. possible to send messages, stream music and movies, and have meetings

Q

Negative effects on the environment of using technology

A
  1. technology require resources to operate like electricity
If fossil fuels such as coal or oil are used to create the electricity, this has a negative effect on the environment.
  2. A lot of technologies are built into items that release carbon emissions. such as cars, planes and factories.
  3. There is a constant push to make technology better, faster and more. This creates waste
  4. technology is thrown into landfill, which leaks toxic materials into the ground and nearby water sources. (e-waste)

Q

PRIVACY

What does having privacy mean?

A

having a place where you can go that your actions are not seen and monitored, and therefore cannot be judged by others

23
Q

PRIVACY

What are some concerns about targeted advertising?

A

It can be invasive, and sometimes show age-inappropriate content.

23
PRIVACY What is one of the biggest privacy issues with IT systems?
Technologies that track a user's location.
24
PRIVACY What is a major issue with data tracking by IT systems?
Much of it is done without user consent.
25
PRIVACY What is an example of constant, consent-less tracking in cities?
Closed-circuit television (CCTV).
26
INCLUSION What does inclusion in IT systems mean?
the provision of equal access and opportunities to everyone
27
INCLUSION How can online communities both positively and negatively affect society?
They can support inclusion but also exclude people through conscious or unconscious bias.
28
INCLUSION What is an example of conscious exclusion in online communities?
Content targeted only to a specific ethnic group.
29
INCLUSION How can AI have inclusivity issues?
It can inherit the human biases of its programmers or trainers.
30
INCLUSION What kinds of bias can be embedded in AI?
Sexism, racism, and ableism.
31
INCLUSION What is extremism in the context of online communities?
Using manipulative techniques to involve others in dangerous or illegal behaviour.
32
INCLUSION Why is manipulation through online communities considered unethical?
It misuses trust and association, potentially harming others and damaging reputations.
33
CIVIL LIBERTIES What is Civil liberties
a person's right to basic freedoms as long as they respect other people's rights
34
CIVIL LIBERTIES Why might governments limit what people can access on IT systems?
to prevent access to certain content, such as violent material, in order to protect citizens.
35
CIVIL LIBERTIES What is the argument against government censorship of online content?
Some believe it violates civil liberties and that governments should not control what people can see.
36
ACCESS What is the "digital divide"?
the divide between people who have access to and can use technology and the internet, and those that do not
37
ACCESS Why might some people feel excluded by the move to online services?
They may not feel comfortable using technology, especially for essential services like banking.
38
ACCESS Why is the digital divide considered an ethical issue?
Because it can exclude people from necessary services that should be accessible to everyone.
39
ACCESS How does limited bandwidth contribute to the digital divide?
People without high-speed internet miss out on services like streaming content.
40
ACCESS Why do people in remote areas often struggle with internet access?
Their regions may lack the infrastructure to support high-speed broadband.
41
ACCESSIBILITY What is accessibility
refers to the kind of features that are included to make sure that the IT system can be used by everybody, including those who have disabilities
42
ACCESSIBILITY Examples of Accessibility features
1. Text-to-speech software - to allow text to be read out loud for users with sight issues. 2. Dark mode - allows text to be read more easily for users with sight issues and dyslexia. 3. Speech recognition software - to allow users with limited mobility to control a system using their voice. 4. Screen magnifier - enlarges the screen so that users with sight issues can see it more easily. 5. Making font larger - so that users with sight issues can read text more easily. 6. Keyboard-only navigation - so that users who find it difficult to use a mouse can navigate a system. 7. Sticky keys - pressing one key at a time instead of having to hold down multiple keys together,
43
EXPRESSION What ethical conflict arises with freedom of speech online?
Some believe all views should be allowed, while others think harmful or offensive content should be restricted.
44
EXPRESSION Why is freedom of speech important to many people?
It allows them to express their thoughts and beliefs about how they want to live.
45
EXPRESSION How do social media platforms address content-related ethical concerns?
By regulating the type of content posted and restricting account access by age.
46
THE IMPACT OF WIRELESS ACCESS ON A GLOBAL SCALE What is wireless access:
access to the internet that does not require any cables
47
What is a major benefit of widespread wireless access?
It increases inclusivity by allowing more people to access services and information.
48
What is "location awareness"?
devices that are able to determine their own location
49
How is location awareness helpful in natural disaster zones?
It helps rescue teams locate people quickly.
50
How does GPS rely on location awareness?
it uses it to provide directions and navigation.
51
What privacy concern is raised by location awareness?
It allows for constant tracking of a person's location, which can lead to privacy invasion or safety risks.
52
How can location awareness be misused?
Malicious individuals could track someone’s whereabouts using their device's location data.
53
Why is wireless access essential for smart cities?
It enables efficient, cost-effective communication between millions of devices.
54
A smart city can have benefits such as:
1. better public transportation 2. improved water facilities 3. improved heating facilities 4. improved lighting facilities 5. fewer traffic issues 6. safer public spaces 7. reduced crime levels.
