7 - Nasolacrimal System Flashcards
(36 cards)
4 functions of tear film
Optic, comfort, metabolism, immune system
How does the tear film provide comfort
Keeps the surgace of cornea and conjuctivial moist to allow tissue to slide across one another
How does tear film provide metabolism
Transfers oxygen from air to cornea, provides and transports nutrients, electrolytes, growth factors, removes debris
How does tear film help with immune system
Prevent infection due to present of anti bacterial substances - IgA, lysozyme, lactoferrin
How long foes it take for teaser fil to break up when blinking is prevented
20 - 40 seconds
Up to what % of tear volume evaporates normally
25
How long does it take for the aqueous tears to evaporate completely - turn over time
10 mins
Inner later of tear film
Aqueous mucous layer
Outer later of bi layered tear film
Lipid layer
What glands produce aqueous
Orbital/ lacrimal and nictans/third eyelid
Orbital/ lacrimal gland are along
Internal surgace of zygomatic proces of frontal bone and orbital ligament
Nictan / third eyelids are located
Deep in the medial orbit
Lipid component are secreted by
Meibomian/tarsal glands
What are resonpsile for productions mucin
Conjuctivial goblet cells
75% of tears drain down
Nasolactimal duct
Afferent nerves arise in
Cornea and conjunctiva
Opthalmic division of trigeminal nerve communicates to
Lacrimal nuclues of facial nerve in ponds
efferent nerves
Supply the glands
Schirmer tear test
Quantifies reflex and basal aqueous production
Normal dogs schirmer tear test
15 - 25 mm/min
Normal cats schirmer tear test
Great than 8 mm/min
Normal horse schirmer tear test
Great than 11 mm
Test can you do on excites with small eyes
Phenol red thread test and ended on tic paper point test
Jones test
Evaluate passage of fluid down the nasolactimal duct
