clinical benefits of NPWT

- removal excess fluid and inhibitory agents
- reduces bacterial load
- splints the wound
- promotes perfusion
- approximates wound edges
- promotes optimal wound environment (moist, warm)
- promotes formation of granulation tissue

indications for NPWT

- chronic (diabetic, pressure, venous stasis ulcers)
- acute (trauma, partial thickness burns, open abdominal wounds, dehisced wounds, exposed hardware and tendons, skin flap, skin graft, degloving)

*** contraindications for NPWT

- malignancy w/i wound
- untreated osteomyelitis
- fistulas to organs or body cavities
- necrotic tissue w/i wounds
- wounds w/ exposed vessels

keep therapy in progress while dressing is in place to minimize infection for _______hrs/day
