When did the Herero people move into Namibia?
During the 17th century the pastoral
nomadic people keeping cattle moved into Namibia.
From where did the Herero come?
They came from East African lakes and entered Namibia from the north west.
Where did they stay first before they moved to Damaraland?
They stayed in Kaokoland but in the middle of the 19th century some tribes moved further south.
What tribe remained in Kaokoland?
Tribes known as the Himba.
What are the Himba of the Herero?
They are actually descendants of the group.
Why did the Herero herders fled?
They fled into the remote northwest after being displaced by the Nama.
For what are the Himba women known?
Their intricate hairstyles and traditional jewelry.
What is the Himba’s clothes made of?
Lion cloth or goat skinned mini skirt.
What does the Himba do to protect themselves against the sun?
They rub their bodies with red ochre and fat to protect themselves.
From what are their homesteads made?
Structures made of palm leaves, mud and cattle dung.

The dynastic period started with the reign of Egypt’s first King, Narmer, 3100 B.C. This was the age of pyramids, mummification and hieroglyphic writing. Ruled by king or pharaoh.

Area of natural water in desert that allows plant life.
What is a cataract?
Rocky area thats creates a waterfall or rapid. Nile River has six.
What made the Nile River a dependable source?
Flooding began in June every year. As water lowered, it would leave rich fertile soil for farmers.
