08 - Nervous system Flashcards
Large granular body found in neurons. These granules are of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) with rosettes of free ribosomes, and are the site of protein synthesis.
Nissl body
This refers to the dissolution o f the Nissl bodies in the neuron and the loss of cytoplasmic basophilia
chromatolysis
Identify: the cell body of a neuron (containing the nucleus)
perikaryon
Steps of neuronal regeneration
- Changes in the Perikaryon
- Degeneration of the distal axonal segment
- Regeneration of the proximal axonal segment
Refers to the degeneration of the distal axonal segment
Wallerian degeneration (a.k.a. anterograde degeneration)
Identify: CNS mononuclear phagocyte
microglia
Cells in the CNS that are neither neurons nor microglia
macroglia
Two types of macroglia and their functions
Astrocytes - nutrition and support
Oligodendrocytes - source of myelin
These cells line the ventricles and secrete CSF
ependymal cells
source of myelin in the CNS
oligodendrocytes
source of myelin in the PNS
Schwann cells
Disease: immune-mediated destruction of oligodendrocytes
multiple sclerosis
Disease: immune-mediated destruction of Schwann cells
Guillain-Barre syndrome
Infection with this microorganism is associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome
Campylobacter jejuni
Most critical event in the regeneration of a peripheral nerve
proliferation of schwann cells
