7.1 Equilibrium Systems Flashcards

Q

Dynamic Equilibrium

A

a situation where one property remains the same while two
opposing processes occur at the same rate. For example : walking up the “down”
escalator.
In chemistry, dynamic equilibrium is described as the point where the rate of the
forward reaction is exactly equal to the rate of the reverse reaction . At
equilibrium, the rate of disappearance of reactants is equal to the rate of formation
of products. So although it may appear to the observer, that “nothing” is happening
(all is static), on the molecular level there is a lot of activity.

Solubility Equilibrium

A

Dissolving a solid in water to form a saturated
solution, at one point the rate of dissolving =rate of crystallization

Phase Equilibrium

A

Behaviour of a liquid in a closed system, eg water Eventually, the rate of evaporation = rate of condensation
