7.1 Proteins Flashcards
(6 cards)
What makes a side chain acidic?
Amino
What makes a side chain hydrophilic?
Hydroxyl or Carbonyl
What does the secondary structure look like?
It has the a-helix or B-pleats
How would the structure and function of a protein change if a hydrophobic amino acid was substituted for a hydrophilic one?
The structure of the protein would change so the hydrophilic amino acid would be on the outside instead of the inside
How are the results of protein denaturation different from the effect and results of a mutation
Protein denaturation unfolds the protein but it doesn’t change the primary structure which is what a mutation does.
How is the tertiary structure formed by the different types of attractions
Hydrophilic to the outside, hydrophobic to the middle, acidic to basic, and cysteine to cysteine.
