A timeline of Threlkeld?

A

Pre Historic Times- Densely wooded and swampy from the remains of glacial lake.
1200s- An ancient place of worship was established in the village with the rise of christianity, this is now ST. Mary’s Church.
Late 1500s and early 1600s- Two episodes of famine/starvation hit the village
1800s- Many farms existed- mainly for cattle and sheep grazing
1900s- Village was a minor boom town as quantities of zinc and lead was discovered. Over 100 men were employed at the local mine and terraced houses were built for them.Mining was important until 1960s and quarrying until 1980Ss when the quarry shut down.
1904- Blencathra Holiday centre opened, serving as a sanatorium for TB. It is now run by the Field Studies council for residential courses.
TODAY- Still a farming community but tourism is important to the economy, popular for mountain walkers due to Blencathra. many holiday homes in village with new golf course and Quarry museum.

  • Fron Penrith to Keswick there is a 3 lane highway
  • Mining has damaged the views of Threlkeld
  • No one stops to go to Threlkeld as the A66 doesn’t pass through it.
