Define Stress
Response to events that threaten or challenge an individual

Direct physiological effects of stress
Elevated blood pressure, Decreased immune system functioning, Increased hormonal activity
Unhealthy behaviors of stress
Increased use of nicotine, alcohol, Decreased sleep, Decreased nutrition.
Indirect health related behaviors of stress
Decreased likelihood seeking medical advice. Less likely to exercise, decrease compliance w/ medical advice.
Define Problem-focused coping
Attempt to manage a stressful problem/situation by directly changing situation to make it less stressful.
Define Emotion-focused coping
Involves conscious regulation of emotion
Social support coping
Assistance and comfort supplied by others
Defense coping
Unconscious strategies that distort / deny true nature of the situation. Not acknowledging the stress.
Define hardiness
Personality characteristic associated w/ lower rate of stress related illness.Take charge people who revel in life’s challenges.
Define Resilience
Ability to withstand, overcome following much adversity. A response to level of hardiness.
Define Anorexia
Starvation to maintain low weight. Hyperfocused on NOT eating.
Define bulimia
Binge and purge eating. Vomiting. Eat A LOT, then purge.
