Carlo Gesualdo (c1561-1613): “Io parto**” e non più dissi

  • Text by contemporary poet (Not Petrarch)
    • Significant because by the end of 16th century, they move away from old-fashioned poet and setting text by living poets of the day
    • Not a sonnet (A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line. )
      • Free form of poetry
  • Text: dialogue between lovers
    • Switch between Direct Speech (What’s in quotations) and a Narrator
  • Lots of Chromaticism
    • Look for accidentals in the melodic lines
  • Contrast between consonance/dissonance
    • You’ll hear more dissonance
    • Consonance shines through like a light in the darkness
  • Disconnected melodic lines
    • Sad sounding notes on the word grief
  • Uneven texture and style
    • Sounds almost operatic
      • Switch between recit and singing. Shifts gears a lot.
    • Texture always shifts.
    • Bits of homophony and imitation. Not like Josquin
  • Stravinsky orchestrated 3 of his madrigals
  • Hard, couldn’t sight read. Too complicated.
    • Sung by concerto delle donne (professional female ensemble)
  • Compare to Jacques Arcadealt (1507-1568) – first generation Madrigalist which was more consonant and easier to sing.

A

Orlando di Lasso, Cum essem parvulus

  • Your clue that this is a motet:
    • In Latin
  • Corinthians
    • Paul the Evangelist
  • Talking about being a child
    • Sung by choir boys
    • Mirrors the structure of the text in the music
      • “as a child”
  • Riddles
    • Set to dense counterpoint

Q

WHO composed the example?

A

NAWM 63 Thomas Morley, My bonny lass she smileth

40
Q

Talk about this piece

A
  • English composers and listeners were obsessed with ITALIAN MUSIC
    • They largely stole the madrigals and balletts that were translated into English
    • Italian Ballettos –> English Balletts
  • Blatant violation of copyright law:
    • Thomas Morley’s “balletts” and Giacomo Gastoldi
  • Music
    • Very light hearted text
    • Homophonic texture
    • Strophic and binary
      • aabb
      • Repeat sign tells you the form
    • Dance-like Rhythms
    • “Fa-la-la” Choruses - Defining characteristic of the Balletto
