7.3 - decomposers Flashcards
(5 cards)
What does decomposing mean?
Decomposing means when organic matter is mouldy and is rotting, or is already rotten.
Decomposing is a natural process that transforms organic materials into inorganic matter.
Who are decomposers?
Decomposers are organisms that feed on organic matter to make it rot and mouldy. Examples include:
* Earthworms
* Protozoa
* Bacteria
* Microscopic fungi
* Fungi
Decomposers play a crucial role in the ecosystem by recycling nutrients.
What are the steps to experiment on mould growth at different temperatures?
- Get 2 identical slices of bread and 2 identical plastic plates
- Add a little bit of water on the bread, ensure it’s not too wet
- Leave the bread in the air for about 30 minutes for microorganisms to reach the bread
- Cover each bread with a plastic zip block bag
- Place one plate in a warm place and one in a cold place
- Record the appearance each day.
This experiment helps to observe the effect of temperature on mould growth.
What safety measures should be taken during the mould growth experiment?
- Do not open the zip block bag to prevent mould spores from spreading into the air
- Wear gloves
These measures help maintain a safe environment while handling potentially harmful mould.
what conditions do you need for microorganisms to grow?
it needs to be moist and the perfect temp
