7.3.13 Vernier Height Gauges Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a vernier height gauge?
A vernier height gauge has a vertical beam scale fixed to a flat base and is usually used on a surface plate or a marking out table.
What is the primary use of a vernier height gauge?
It is used for measuring absolute height above the datum surface and for measuring differences in height between different parts of the item.
What is a common application of a height gauge?
The height gauge is frequently used for making accurate markings on components.
How is accurate marking achieved with a height gauge?
A finger with a sharp ground edge is used for marking.
What scales do vernier height gauges typically have?
Vernier height gauges are often dual scale instruments with both millimetre and inch scales.
What must be ensured when using a vernier height gauge?
The base of the height gauge, the surface table, and the workpiece must always be kept perfectly clean.
What should be done with the height gauge after use?
When finished, the height gauge must be carefully returned to proper storage.
How can a vernier height gauge measure the underside of a feature?
The finger must be reversed to measure the underside of a feature on the component.
What additional allowance must be added when measuring to the underside?
An allowance equal to the height of the finger arm plus twice the height of the finger (X + 2Y mm) must be added to the scale reading.
