Define public health.
The art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society.
State the three levels of prevention.
- Primary
- Secondary
- Tertiary
Describe primary prevention.
Aims to prevent disease or injury before it even occurs. E.g. campaigns to prevent alcohol consumption
Describe secondary prevention.
Aims to reduce the impact of a disease or injury that has already occurred. E.g. alcohol advice
Describe tertiary prevention.
Aims to ‘soften the impact’ of a disease that is long-lasting. E.g. Thiamin B1 vitamin to alcohol dependents
