7.4 Lecture Notes Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is cytoplasm?
The environment enclosed by the plasma membrane and is a semifluid material.
What is the cytoskeleton?
A supporting network of long, thin protein fibers that form a framework for the cell and proved an anchor for organelles.
What are the microtubles?
They are long, hollow protein cylinders that form a rigid skeleton for the cell and assist in moving substances within the cell.
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus is part of a cell that contains most of the cell’s DNA, which stores information used to make proteins that determine a cell’s growth, function, and reproduction.
What are ribosomes?
Ribosomes are organelles that manufacture proteins.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
The endoplasmic reticulum is a membrane system of folded sacs and interconnected channels that serves as the site for protein and lipid synthesis.
What is the golgi apparatus?
The Golgi apparatus is a flattened stack of membranes that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins.
What is a vacuole?
A vacuole is a membrane bound sac used for temporary storage.
What are lysosomes?
Lysosomes are vesicles that contain substances that digest excess or worn-out organelles and food particles.
What are centrioles?
Centrioles are organelles made of groups of microtubules that function during cell division.
What is the mitochondria?
Mitochondria convert fuel particles into usable energy. It is the powerhouse of the cell.
What are chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts capture light and convert it into chemical energy in process called photosynthesis.
What is the cell wall?
The cell wall is a thick, rigid, mesh of fibers that surround the outside of the plasma membrane.
What are cilia?
Cilia are short, numerous projections that look like hair.
What are flagella?
Flagella are longer and less numerous than cilia.
