Q

Diamond, graphite, and graphene are all allotropes of carbon. They are also giant covalent structures. What is an allotrope?

A

Different forms of the same element in the same physical state.

Q

What are the properties of giant covalent structures?

A

Very high melting point, diamond doesn’t conduct electricity, graphite and graphene do conduct because they have delocalised electrons, insoluble in water, diamond is extremely hard, graphite is a slippery soft solid, graphene is 100 times stronger than steel and is very light, thin, and inexpensive.
