Outline the key things to look for on a renal examination
Intro
General inspection - stable, pain, SOB, wasting, oedema
Hands + arms - tremor (uraemia), leukonychia/koilonychia, pale palmar creases, skin turgor, cap refill, pulse, AV fistula (palpate, auscultate), BP
Face - yellow tinge (uraemia), hearing aid (Alport’s), butterfly rash (SLE), collapsed nasal bridge (Wegeners)
Eyes - corneal arcus, xanthelasma, periorbital oedema, pale conjunctiva
Mouth - dry mucous membranes, gingival hypertrophy
Neck - central line, raised JVP
Chest - look for scars, gynaecomastia, spider naevi, loss of axillary hair. Auscultate heart (uraemic pericarditis) and lung bases
Abdo - look for scars, distension, PD, insulin injection sites. Palpate abdo, ballot kidneys, percuss. Auscultate renal bruits
Legs - peripheral oedema
To complete - BP, full CVS exam, urine dip
