Types Of Plate Boundaries Flashcards

1
Q

Collision boundary

A

Occur when 2 plates of similar densities move together. This causes the material between them to buckle and rise up forming a mountain. Volcanoes are very common at this type of boundary but no volcanoes are formed.

Q

Conservative boundary

A

They don’t crash together they slide side by side. When they slide they cause friction which then leads to an earthquake.

Q

Constructive boundary

A

The 2 plates move apart from each other. As they move apart magma fills up the gap creating a volcano

Q

Destructive boundary

A

Found when an oceanic plate and a continental plate meet. The oceanic plate slides under the continental plate which then makes the oceanic plate melt due to friction. The magma rises and forms a volcano

Q

What’s the continental plate

A

It forms land and is mostly made of granite, low density , usually 30-50km thick

Q

What’s the oceanic plate

A

Under the ocean , mostly igneous rock ( basalt) which is denser , much thinner 6-8km thick
