identity Flashcards
awesomeness
Leibniz views 2
people at different ages are different people so problem of reidentifying same object does exist across time. 2) objects cannot change - no change theory - if objects change old one ceases to exist and new one takes place
Views of our/objects existing 4
Perdurantism - us being here now is just a snippet of us. Our overall life is full object of what we are. 2) eternalism - all times and things that exist at any time are equally real 3) Endurantism - particular exists by existing wholly at several times 4) Presentism - only present real and exisiting
Theseus 3 - response to pe
1)views like perdurantism cannot deal with Theseus ship. 2) Can’t tell us what original ship is - fixing ship so everything is replaced 3) and at what point ship changes (5% being replaced)
response to leibniz - brain identity
brain idenitity criterion - p1 and p2 are same if have same brain.
problem with brain identity 1 3)
split brain - what happens to you? 1) don’t survive - but could probably survive with one hemisphere 2) survive - but as which one?! 3) survive as both - but can’t as both aren’t identical to each other!
problem with brain identity 2
mind transplant - get rid of junk of mind through brain cleaning but load brain into wrong body or two bodies…who becomes who?!
Bodily identity criterion/animal human criterion
p1 is same as p2 if have same body/human animal
problem with bodily identity/human 1) 2
ever a fetus/could become human vegtable? seems wrong to think as yourself as same when mentally different. 2) also slightly different body - different person?!
problem with bodily idenity 2)
identity intuition - transporter clones me with same memories (only one allowed to go back) seems important that i continue to survive not someone else who takes themselves to be me
overall
theories fail to account for how can properly identify ourselves
